Chronic Heartburn -- Causes and Treatments

Millions of people experience heartburn, an uncomfortable condition that causes a burning sensation in the chest. While most people get heartburn, or acid reflux, once a month or less, others experience it more frequently. Chronic heartburn can be a real problem, and can lead to a variety of additional problems for the sufferer. Sometimes, recurrent heartburn can be a sign of a more serious problem. There are many reasons why you may be experiencing this problem, and various ways to remedy it.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid travels up to the esophagus rather than down into the stomach. The lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, usually opens only when swallowing so that food can get to the stomach, then it closes. Sometimes, however, the lower esophageal sphincter doesn't close properly and stomach acid escapes upwards, causing the discomfort. Along with a burning sensation in the chest, you may also experience trouble swallowing, belching, and a bad taste in your mouth. The pain may increase when you lie down or even bend over. Usually, heartburn occurs shortly after eating or going to bed.

Heartburn can be caused by a variety of factors, and one of them is dietary. Spicy foods, caffeine, tomato products, citrus fruits, coffee, alcohol and even smoking can cause heartburn or make it worse for some people. Eating large meals or eating late at night can also be factors. Sometimes, certain medications can be to blame. Other times, weakness or dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter is the cause. When it comes to frequently recurring acid reflux problems, there may be an underlying disorder causing the problem.

Hiatal hernia is one condition that can be a cause of frequent heartburn. This condition occurs when a portion of the stomach protrudes abnormally into the chest cavity. Peptic ulcers are another possible disorder. Then there's GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD is a common cause of recurrent heartburn and if left untreated can sometimes lead to more serious problems like esophageal cancer.

Thankfully, there are a variety of ways to treat chronic heartburn and its causes. Eating smaller meals more slowly, avoiding food before bedtime, and cutting out aggravating foods can often help. Wearing loose clothing and quitting smoking can also provide relief. Some people find that dietary and lifestyle changes combined with antacid use can significantly reduce uncomfortable symptoms. However, before taking antacids see your doctor to determine why your frequent heartburn is happening and what the best course of action is. Sometimes, a prescription medication like a proton pump inhibitor or H2 antagonist will be recommended. In rare cases, surgery may be required to remedy the problem.
