A Guide to Heartburn Remedies

Heartburn, or acid reflux, is a condition where the stomach acid travels upwards into the esophagus and causes an uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest area. Other symptoms of this condition include a sour taste in the throat or mouth and difficulty swallowing. Millions of people deal with heartburn once a month or less, while others have the problem more frequently. There are many heartburn causes, and just as many remedies.

Successfully treating uncomfortable acid reflux is best achieved when the cause is determined. For many, heartburn is related to the diet. Spicy and fatty foods, citrus, tomatoes, caffeine and alcohol are all contributing factors. Eating close to bedtime can cause an onset of heartburn. However, others find that their heartburn is caused by certain medications or conditions like GERD, which stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease.

One treatment for acid reflux is to change the diet. By avoiding the foods that aggravate the problem, eating smaller meals and avoiding food before bedtime, symptoms can often be lessened. Sometimes, wearing looser fitting clothing can also provide relief. Even quitting smoking can help the frequency and intensity of heartburn. Some people choose to turn to natural treatments such as herbal teas made from soothing ingredients like ginger and even homeopathic remedies. If you are interested in trying an alternative treatment, be sure to consult a licensed professional such as a dietician, physician or naturopath.

Others find relief from over the counter antacids and medications. Antacids work to neutralize the acid in the stomach which decreases the discomfort. Common antacids include Maalox, Mylanta, Tums and Rolaids. While antacids are readily available, inexpensive and generally safe and effective, you should still consult your doctor before using them. They can potentially interact with certain prescription medicines.

Speaking of prescription medicines, some heartburn sufferers find the best relief from drugs prescribed by their doctor. Prescriptions are often recommended for sufferers of GERD, people with peptic ulcers, or those who experience frequent or severe acid reflux. There are two main types: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 antagonists. Both of these types work to reduce the amount of stomach acid that is produced.

The best way to choose the right heartburn remedies for you is to first consult with your doctor. After a thorough examination, your doctor will diagnose the cause of the problem and tell you which treatment options are recommended.
